While the world watches today’s total solar eclips While the world watches today’s total solar eclipse, here’s the one I chased 10 years ago 🌑 9 March 2016, Palu, Indonesia. I led a group of 8 first-time eclipse photographers to catch totality, shot on a Canon 7D at 400mm with a DIY solar filter. No fancy gear, just chasing the shadow. Imagine seeing the sky darkening like dusk in seconds, stars coming out in the middle of the day, tropical heat dropping into a sudden chill. And it’s actually darker in person than it looks on camera. Sensors gather more light than our eyes do in that moment, so footage never looks quite as dark as it really was. Ten years later, a new total solar eclipse is crossing Greenland, Iceland and Spain today, the first time totality has touched mainland Europe since 1999. Happy New Year to you!!! We used to think getting Happy New Year to you!!! We used to think getting the coveted Blue Zone ticket was the hardest part but that was actually just the beginning. The real challenge was sprinting to secure a spot, standing completely still at 1°C for over four hours, and not being able to pee for more than seven. The moment we arrived, people started pushing as more tried to squeeze to the front. Holding our ground until midnight felt like surviving a battlefield. After the fireworks ended, we knew this would be our first and last time. Many said last year was better when people could move down for a much better unobstructed view, and the fairy lights installed nearby this year were incredibly distracting, so much so that people kept asking for them to be turned off. What we learned: if you don’t have a ticket, watching it on TV is honestly the best option. If you do have one, queue early, run fast, or expect your view to be blocked by trees. The Blue Zone looks huge on the map, but good spots with a truly clear view are extremely limited. Is it worth it? For us, probably not a second time. Save this for your next aurora trip. 1. Lake Minnewanka Close to town and a common starting point for beginners. The north-facing view helps, but light pollution is noticeable and constant car headlights along the road can be frustrating during long exposures. 2. Two Jack Lake Calm, scenic and often quieter than Minnewanka, but the car park can get crowded and the light pollution from cars is very serious. Reflections are beautiful on windless nights, though patience is needed. 3. Vermilion Lakes The easiest place to shoot auroras in Banff. Park right beside the lake and set up fast. Reflections are great during strong KP events, but town glow is visible and compositions can get busy. 4. Peyto Lake High elevation and darker skies make this a favourite among dedicated aurora chasers, but you need to hike a distance from the parking lot to reach the lookout. The wind here can be brutal, especially in winter. 5. Lake Louise World famous, but the lake faces south. Unless the KP is high, you might not see much aurora in that direction. When the conditions align, the glacier backdrop creates dramatic results. 6. Moraine Lake [Our Favorite] Nothing beats the Ten Peaks when the aurora erupts, but access is restricted at night since no private cars are allowed beyond the entrance. You need to take shuttles during operational seasons. At the top of the Rockpile, the wind can be extremely strong. Most people think red auroras are rare but the tru Most people think red auroras are rare but the truth is people living in lower latitudes see red glows near the horizon quite often during moderate storms. What is truly rare is a night when the entire sky turns red from top to bottom, which usually only happens during the most extreme geomagnetic storms. On 11 November 2025 the storm was so strong that the red emission band rose far above the horizon and filled the whole sky. This is something even high latitude chasers almost never witness because the red layer forms at very high altitude and needs an exceptionally powerful disturbance to brighten enough to take over the whole dome. Despite many sources calling this year or next yea Despite many sources calling this year or next year the peak for aurora viewing, the solar activity seems to have already turned a corner. We saw two X-class flares last September (2024), yet there were zero X-flares last month. Last October 2024 was a period of extreme intensity, recording four X-class flares, notably the X7.1 (Oct 1st) and the monster X9.0 (Oct 3rd). This month has recorded zero X-class flares so far. This clear drop in powerful activity suggests the true Solar Maximum actually occurred last year, and we are now likely on the declining slope of the solar cycle. While fantastic displays are still possible, the window for the most frequent and intense aurora shows is closing.
