Like most photography genres, it's imperative to understand your subject before you photograph them and astrophotography isn't just about photographing the Milky Way or the Moon, it's a specialized form of photography that entails capturing of light photons that traveled millions and billions of light years through the universe before it hit our camera sensors. It's the ability to image celestial objects that are invisible to our naked eye and that people didn't even know existed. Many people also consider deep sky photography of nebulae and galaxies to be the pinnacle of astrophotography.
