[Photos] – August 2014 Twilight Wonders of Mount Bromo Astrophotography Tour
Just returned from my last 3D2N trip to Mount Bromo for 2014 and like one of my trips on September last year, our first night was extremely cold and foggy but all of the participants managed to capture the Milky Way galaxy upon our arrival before it set below the horizon. The sky condition on our last night was pristine and I've captured more deep sky objects during this trip than any of my previous trips there, for a change. Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex is a dark nebula of gas and dust, an emission and reflection nebula of about 14 light-years across, that's located at some 460 light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Took this with a Canon 5D2 and a 135mm F2 at Mount Bromo on 24 August 2014.

Like most photography genres, it's imperative to understand your subject before you photograph them and astrophotography isn't just about photographing the Milky Way or the Moon, it's a specialized form of photography that entails capturing of light photons that traveled millions and billions of light years through the universe before it hit our camera sensors. It's the ability to image celestial objects that are invisible to our naked eye and that people didn't even know existed. Many people also consider deep sky photography of nebulae and galaxies to be the pinnacle of astrophotography.

Tips and Tricks to Shoot The Milky Way Galaxy Under Extreme Light Pollution in Singapore
If you've read my tutorial on how I shot the Milky Way under extreme light pollution in Singapore and still didn't manage to get your shot, the following tips and tricks here might help a little.
Shoot during wee hours
The amount of light pollution is usually low a few hours before dawn and you can take advantage of the darker skies near midnight or during the wee hours of the morning.
Locate the galactic center of the Milky Way galaxy
Searching for the galactic center of the Milky Way can be daunting for those who just started out and know very little about our own galaxy. The galactic center of the Milky Way is located between Scorpius and Sagittarius constellations and if you're unfamiliar with the night sky, you may download my mobile app to help you locate the Milky Way.

10 April 2014 – Rising Milky Way above Marina Barrage Singapore
It was a cloudy night on 10 April 2014 but having checked the wind direction and knowing that the southeastern sky would clear by the time the Milky Way appeared almost parallel to the horizon, I arrived at Marina Barrage an hour earlier and waited for the right moment to get my shot. If you've been following my Milky Way images taken in Singapore, you will know I took more shots of Milky Way when it's in a horizontal orientation than when it's diagonal or vertical and I was very pleased when that part of the sky cleared up as expected.
I actually took this shot in response to a challenge posed by one of my followers in April 2014 to take the Milky Way when it's above one of the landmarks in Singapore but somehow I managed to pull this off using the Marina Bay Sands image instead, which was taken for experimentation purpose after I was done at Marina Barrage.

30 July 2014 – Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower
This post assumes that you are observing the Delta Aquarids meteor shower, which is peaking on 30 July 2014 morning, from Singapore. The waxing moon's illumination is only around 7% and it's virtually absent throughout the night sky, which means that the viewing conditions will be as good as it gets on that night if the seeing is good.
The maximum hourly rate of Delta Aquarids meteor shower is around 15 to 20 under good sky conditions and this meteor shower favors observers in the Southern Hemisphere than the northerners because of the radiant's higher altitude.
Stargazers and astrophotographers can start to keep a lookout for it from 9.16PM SGT (104 degrees from True north) on 29 July 2014 to 5.51AM SGT (247 degrees from True north) on 30 July 2014, before the meteors are obscured by the bright sky. Delta Aquarids meteor shower will reach its peak at 3.18AM SGT (184 degrees from True north) on 30 July 2014 and its radiant point will be located at around 75 degre...

26 July 2014 – National Day Parade (NDP) Rehearsal Fireworks with Rising Milky Way above Laser Show at Marina Bay Sands
The NDP rehearsal fireworks photography outing was concluded with great success with many photography enthusiasts from all walks of life converging at Esplanade outdoor theatre yesterday hoping to capture the spectacular fireworks display and probably also the Milky Way galaxy. I've also received more questions about the Milky Way than the fireworks which I will answer them later in this post.
It turned out that the sky conditions were unfavorable with many layers of thin haze overhead and the fireworks display was pretty decent considering it's just a rehearsal. Nonetheless, I was able to complete my earlier image with the first burst of fireworks before the entire CBD was obscured by the smoke.
